Chapter Thirty

Jo hadn’t spent a single night at home in over a week. Her mornings and evenings belonged to Mr. Fluffy Cuddles, while her nights and workdays belonged to Zeno.

It was exhausting, but she couldn’t remember a time when she’d been happier. And honestly, could she really complain about a lack of sleep when she spent every night in those powerful, protective arms?

She sat across from Zeno at the chess table in his living room with a wine glass in one hand, a smile on her face, and a panoramic view of Lower Manhattan that stretched from wall to wall and floor to ceiling.

Yeah, she would’ve had a hard time feeling sorry for anyone in her situation.

As they played their game of chess, she couldn’t help but admire the way his sharp mind worked. The way he planned his moves several steps ahead, always anticipating her next move. The way his eyes gleamed with a fierce intensity every time he captured one of her pieces.

But it wasn’t just his mind that drew her to him. It was his raw masculinity, the way he exuded power and control. The way his deep voice sent shivers down her spine.

Jo took a sip of wine and studied the chessboard with a sigh. “You’d think I’d get better at this game after playing it so much with you, but I might actually be getting worse.”

She thought back to the countless games she’d played with her grandfather when she was younger. He’d taught her how to play chess and made sure she understood each piece’s role on the board before they ever started a game. He would patiently watch while she carefully considered each move and countermove, just like Zeno watched her now. The only difference was she was pretty sure her grandfather had let her win most of the time back then.

Those memories made her smile. It was nice to think about simpler times like that, before she’d grown up and life had become more complicated.

He laughed and shook his head, pulling her from her thoughts. “No, my love. Not worse. Just...” His voice trailed off as he cocked his head to the side.

“What is it?” Jo looked around the room but didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. “Is something wrong?”

Zeno held a finger to his lips for a moment. All the humor was gone from his face, leaving only a serious scowl that Jo had come to know all too well. “You didn’t hear that?”

Before she could answer, the double French doors leading out to the foyer burst open. Jo screamed as a black-clad figure rushed into the room wielding two large, curved daggers in his hands.

“What the hell is going on?” Zeno roared, nearly overturning the chess table in his haste to stand up. He moved in front of Jo, protecting her with his body and blocking her view of the attacker.

She was too scared to move, and all she could hear for what felt like an eternity was her own heartbeat pounding in her ears.
